View an article regarding the construction of this grade separation project.
Located in the city of Joliet, this concrete encased beam bridge crosses a former alignment of Scott Street near Washington Street.
Built in 1912, the bridge features a single span of concrete encased beam, set onto concrete substructures. It is unknown if the bridge was encased in concrete at the time of construction or at a later date.
In addition, portions of the bridge have been replaced. The northern area and track appears to have been replaced in the 1980s or 1990s. The only active track on the bridge uses the new portion.
Structures like these were common for grade separations, as they were easy to construct and were fairly cheap.
Overall, the bridge appears to be in fair condition. It appears to be mostly free of significant deterioration.
The author has ranked this bridge as being locally significant, due to the common design.
